Rupert Jee’s Hello Deli

I would like to note that currently I have 10 posts on deck.  I haven’t been able to write because of my project.  I have been tearing up the city of New York and have lots to talk about.  My rule is to never put writing before experience, thus I’m behind.  Anyway.

53rd and Broadway

When I started watching Letterman in high school, I told my mom I was going to go there and see Rupert at his Hello Deli.  I fulfilled my promise in November as the first thing I ever did in New York (I fulfilled the much harder part of the promise today, you’ll have to wait for that post). When my family came they also wanted to see Rupert, so that’s where we had lunch on Friday.

The shop is just as it appears on the camera.  It’s small, very small.  The only tables are very tiny and the chairs are even tinier.  Rupert is at the register just like you’d hope he’d be and people go in and out all day.  When we got there for lunch I could tell that they were excited to be there. The Hello Deli makes hogies, and they’re great.  I had already eaten so they all got their sandwiches and I just sat and relaxed.  I can’t remember which they got but all the sandwiches are named after people who are regulars/frequenters of The Late Show.  When I went in November, I got a David Letterman and loved it.  Everything you would expect a sandwich to be.  That’s only half the experience.

After ordering, Dad started talking with Rupert for a bit.  The guy is really genuine.  Throughout our whole visit he would engage customers who came in and never cut off a conversation.  We took a couple pictures with him and my parents bought me the gray shirt hanging on the wall with Rupert’s portrait.

At one point, Jack decided he wanted an ice cream and as he looked for one in the freezer he pulled out a Blackberry.  Rupert thought it was funny and thanked him for finding it.  Honestly, the place is familiar to Late Show fans and comforting compared to the rest of the city.  Part of the reason is that it’s secluded from all the ruckus as it is off Broadway.  I highly recommend making the trip.

On the way out Dad thanked Rupert for the laughs over the years and Rupert humbly said, “My pleasure”.

Rupert also used to go on the street and tick people off, Dad talked to him about it. Check it out, seriously it’s great.
