A New Beginning « The Rowhouse

I finished my internship last Friday at NYU Medical Center. Overall, I enjoyed the program and it definitely gave me a greater understanding of recreational therapy within a hospital. I was most excited to participate and observe in the horticultural therapy sessions. The sessions are held within the greenhouse of the outside garden but they also bring the classes throughout the hospital on different floors. I ended up taking peppermint and vines with me to Visions that I had transplanted and grew within the greenhouse.

Now it is my fourth day at Visions Vacation Camp for the Blind and I am having a great time. I am meeting so many different people and I can’t wait for the participants (They want to be referred to as participants, not students, so that’s what we call them. Any LGYC teen camper knows what I’m saying) to come on Wednesday. Just within the few days I have been here I have learned a great deal of information. I really believe this is going to be a great experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I have to admit the funniest thing we have done so far is prepared for opening night of each camp session. As a staff we were divided up into our appropriate groups, mine is program specialists. Each group has to explain what they are and who each person is within a song of choice. We came up with idea of signing to the song For the Longest Time. It goes a little something like this, “Ohh, Ohh, Ohh, program specialist, Ohh…Ohh..Ohh program specialists, (my part) Sports and Nature are my specialty, I am Michelle the nature lady.” George hates this song. Tonight we had to perform in front of the entire staff and I had to sing my part by myself. I thought it was great, even though I sounded absolutely horrible.

Hopefully, with all the working I am doing sometimes I will be able to give short little up dates on the blog. I miss you all!
